DISCRIMINATIVE ATTITUDES AND PREJUDICE IN THE HIRING PROCESS OF INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES AND THE ROLE OF E-LEARNING

Laureate Online Education (NETHERLANDS)
The review of current literature has demonstrated that the most common forms of workplace discrimination is that of race, gender and ethnicity. Other outgroups who also face discrimination are disabled individuals (with physical disabilities and sensory impairments). Despite the fact that social responsibility and the laws of different countries dictate that discriminating against individuals who are disabled and apply for a job is an illegal act, there is evidence that this discrimination takes place not only in the workplace environment but even in pre-work environment (selection process). This paper aims to reflect on the discriminative attitudes and behaviors towards disabled individuals, focusing on the hiring behaviors of employers, the different experience in the hiring process between disable and non-disabled candidates, as well as the attitudes towards different categories of potential disabled employees. The paper concludes with a proposal to use e-Leaning as a strategic tool for helping students with disabilities to learn and prepare for the workforce, by highlighting the skills, abilities and knowledge that students can acquire through the use of e-learning and online course formats.
