Abstract:
In this paper, we report the results of investigating student understanding of motion concepts in one dimension using the Force, Velocity, Acceleration (FVA) survey in the introductory physics module. The module was taught in the traditional-based lecture style. The pretest average was 34% and the post-test average was 46%. The pre-post gain was 12% and was consistent with what Hake has reported. We found students have difficulties in distinguishing velocity and acceleration, tend to associate the direction of velocity with the direction of net force and associate an applied force in the direction of motion to maintain the motion of an object. These difficulties are common for beginning students. The FVA results can also serve as an assessment of student learning other than the usual summative assessments such as midterms and exams. The results can allow instructors to plan and improve the instructional activities in the module. Keywords:
Mechanics, student understanding, one-dimensional motion.
