Abstract:
In response to the growing needs in learning support in mathematics and statistics in tertiary education, remedial courses in different areas of mathematics and statistics have been arranged for students with lower level of numeracy or limited mathematical backgrounds. The remedial courses, which aim to strengthen students’ numeracy, review the fundamental but essential mathematical concepts that have been covered in the secondary school curriculum. Upon the completion of the course, students will be able to cope with their learning of stage-1 mathematics and/or statistics subjects in the College.
This paper gives a brief overview of learning support in mathematics and statistics in the College, including the implementation details of the remedial courses. It also reports some findings from an investigation undertaken at the College into student perceptions of mathematical difficulties and learning support in mathematics and statistics. This paper closes with discussion of future direction in learning support to enhance learning effectiveness in mathematics and statistics. Keywords:
