Abstract:
This project was a pilot study using one specific device of the delete extra space e-Portfolio package developed by the Student Affairs Office (SAO) of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, for a written Chinese syllabus in the professional programme of Information Science Engineering (ISE).

The goal of SAO's e-Portfolio project is to facilitate the undergraduates' development in different domains of competence, namely Social, Physical & Psychological, Ethics, Career, Intellectual, Aesthetics, and Learning, known as SPECIAL e-Portfolio in brief. The project is open to every undergraduate through the provision of an individual e-Account, and students are encouraged to follow a systematic process for development of each domain in 5 recursive steps: know youself, set goals, make plans, record progress and show achievement. The recursive process is the core mechanism of the technogical development of e-Portfolio.

The assessment method for the Chinese writing subject for ISE is designed in such a way that all assignments are marked with a criterion reference table in line with the objectives of the subject. In writing research, one of the major characterictics in writing activity is to revise what has been produced in a recursive manner. This feature matches with that of e-Portfolio in getting improvement by reviewing one's achievement in a recursive process.

A pilot study was conducted in Nov 2009 to adjust the e-Portfolio mechanism to the Chinese subject with interesting findings.
