CURRICULUM DESIGN AND INNOVATION IN A COMPUTER TOOLS FOR COMMUNICATORS COURSE

Three Bachelor’s Degrees of the Universitat Jaume I (UJI) of Castellón (Advertising and Public Relations degree, Journalism degree and Audiovisual Communication degree) have a computer tools for communicator’s course. The course covers the main computer tools used in the field of communication sciences and is organized in three blocks. The first block examines the main tools for creating and editing different types of media: images, audio, video and computer animation. The second block examines document search tools: databases and search engines. The third block examines the authoring tools used for final production: illustration, layout, hypermedia production and web publishing.

During 2014/2015 new teachers have begun to teach this subject. These teachers have detected: That the practices were tedious and very little useful for the students; that the software was very old, with very expensive licenses and low profit for the students professional development; that Social media, mobile, big data and cloud computing have changed the way we communicate and contents related these subjects should be teaching.

In this context an innovative project have been carried out by teachers of this university to solve the shortcomings mentioned above. The project objective has been to re-design the course curriculum introducing new course objectives, target competencies, course contents, software tools, assessment method, and teaching methodology.

This paper show the work-plan of the innovative project, the project benefits, the computer tools selected, the project performance measurement system and the project results.
