Abstract:
Traditionally, civic education in Latin America has been linked to the transmission and acquisition of civic knowledge and the development of basic moral skills. However, the emergence of new media has generated new ways of exercising citizenship. In this context, the ability to interact critically with the media is called media competence. This ability can be developed through education and allows citizens to have the resources to respond critically to the strategies of control and manipulation of political communication. Political communication is the area in which the discourses of politicians, journalists, and public opinion interact. However, political discourse is often plagued by prejudice and disinformation in order to appeal to the feelings of the recipients and thus convince them to legitimize the actions of certain groups. This article analyzes the results of a systematic review of scientific literature, carried out in the ISI Web of Science database intending to answer two questions: Do impact scientific articles on media competence include the political dimension? And if they do, from what aspects does politics become evident? The search was carried out between the years 2011-2021, from the descriptor "media competence*", refined by "politics*". Out of a total of 70 articles, and after applying some inclusion and exclusion criteria, it resulted in a corpus of two impact articles. The results show that in the field of politics and education research, Media competence is associated with the ability to critically analyze and test the credibility of media texts related to politics and to analyze the non-verbal communication of politicians involved in infotainment programs. Therefore, it is concluded that there is ample space to develop research that considers media competence in the field of citizen training at both the basic and higher levels in education.
