THE USE OF WIKIS AS A TOOL TO IMPROVE COACHING IN FINAL DEGREE PROJECT: AN EXPERIENCE IN HIGHER EDUCATION

The process of convergence in higher education has induced a methodological transformation in teaching actions. In this sense, one of the subjects which adaptation has been harder in Spanish higher education has been Final Degree Project (FDP). This subject requires the development of an original work under the supervision of a tutor, in which the students will have to apply the skills and abilities acquired all along the degree.

The reasons why the establishment of FDP has been tough have been numerous but we can describe two main reasons. On the one hand, this subject has been introduced in several Grades for the first time, which requires an important adaptation process for students and teachers to the new methodology. One the other hand, FDP requires that the student should be able to schedule his own work properly, which usually needs a series of tools that probably have not been properly developed during higher education. Having this scenario into account, it seemed interesting to us to develop a wiki powering the capabilities to encourage coaching process in FDP. The basis of this rationale was that we could define an environment where cooperative learning contributed to students’ empowerment.

The main objective of our work was to develop a wiki to improve coaching process in FDP in Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. In this wiki tutors could upload specific materials and students could share their work and experiences. Those works and experiences were cooperatively commented by tutors and by other students improving an equal-to-equal relationship.

Finally, this work resumes the main aspects that might be have into account when this kind of tools are developed targeting coaching as the main objective to improve and the positive and negative preliminary results of our experience. In general, this experience shows that wiki development improves FDP coaching.
