Abstract:
AI can help solve major challenges in education, improve teaching and learning methods, and speed up progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 4 (UNESCO, n.d.). AI can assist teachers in planning lessons, creating educational materials, and enhancing their knowledge (Peachey, 2023). Additionally, AI can serve as a language skills coach available 24/7 (UNESCO, 2023). However, artificial intelligence presents risks concerning academic integrity, data protection, the accuracy of information, accessibility, and sustainability issues.
This presentation reports on the preliminary results of two ongoing studies. The first study focuses on the application of AI for outlining, research assistance, and grammar reviewing in a core course of introduction to college writing for second language speakers. The second study investigates how pre-service language teachers engage with AI tools and how they perceive the educational value of these tools for their future teaching practices
