Abstract:
Vocabulary knowledge is essential for content area reading since it impacts reading comprehension and student achievement (Hiebert & Kamil, 2005). Learners need multiple exposures to words in a variety of contexts before they will be able to understand, remember, and apply vocabulary (Nagy, 2005). Dictionary definitions have often been used to provide vocabulary instruction; however dictionary definitions are designed to be concise and precise so their meanings can be difficult to understand (Beck, McKeown, & Kucan, 2002). Learning vocabulary can be challenging for all students; however, it doesn’t have to be.

Read alouds, whether digitally enhanced or teacher presented, provide effective ways to support vocabulary instruction. In addition various digital programs such as WordSift, Lingro, NearPod, Academic Word Finder, Shahi, and SnappyWords can be used to further expand students’ vocabulary understanding. Technology based programs can provide multiple exposures while increasing student engagement.

The purpose of this session is to acquaint participants with the use of digitally enhanced read aloud in elementary and secondary classrooms. The presenters will share the commonalities between digitally enhanced and traditional read alouds and ways to use technology to support vocabulary instruction.
