Abstract:
Practical strategies in realistic simulation labs can facilitate the development of skills in controlled or simulated situations, since they are spaces created with the purpose of improving the quality of teaching, providing conditions for the theoretical and practical deepening of the students. Academic monitoring in the discipline of basic nursing procedures provides these resources to students. It is believed that the student who participates in the monitors achieves better performance in practical activities, in addition to manual and cognitive skills. The aim of the study was to identify the factors that influence student performance in the theoretical and practical evaluations, and to describe the importance of academic monitoring and its impacts on the learning process. This is a field research, descriptive, quantitative, exploratory in a University Center in the city of São Paulo. After acceptance in the Ethics and Research Committee and approval of the research subjects, the sample consisted of 63 nursing students, who responded to an instrument, elaborated by the authors, applied by the monitors of the discipline, composed of factors that indicated the favorable performance or not in the practical evaluation and the influence of the academic monitoring in this result. The collected answers were organized systematically in a computerized database through the elaboration of Excel spreadsheets and analyzed later. The factors that influenced the practical performance were distributed in positive and negative. Among the positive ones it was observed the good practical and theoretical knowledge, training of all the techniques and the high frequency in monitoring. Among the negatives were anxiety, insecurity, fear of evaluation and evaluator, and little training during the monitoring. Most of the students reported that monitoring positively influenced their practical performance. Educational strategies such as the use of laboratories and realistic simulation aims at solving issues such as unnecessary exposure of the patient to the practical inexperience of the professionals, with the purpose of keeping nursing practice efficient and safe, for this, it is necessary to develop in the professionals of health cognitive and social skills that will complement their technical skills. The positive results obtained in the study may reflect the practice monitored in realistic simulation labs, since it is a teaching method that has the student as the learning center, where it is the producer of its knowledge, thus increasing its safety when performing actions in their daily practice, monitored practices also reduce fear and insecurity, facilitating the learning process. In relation to the negative aspects, they can be related to the absence of the students in the monitored classes. It is believed that students' poor academic performance is associated with anxiety and fear, students with a greater predisposition to develop these feelings tend to have a decrease in their performance and the lack of academic skills, theoretical and / or practical content, leads the student not to feel prepared for an evaluation. Thus, monitoring is a fundamental strategy for the development of attitudes and competences essential for the training of the nurse practitioner, making possible the experience of action scenarios and, above all, a safe care
