PRESENCE ONLINE: WHAT DOES ENHANCED PRESENCE REALLY MEAN?
University of Arizona (UNITED STATES)
About this paper:
Conference name: 16th International Conference on Education and New Learning Technologies
Dates: 1-3 July, 2024
Location: Palma, Spain
Abstract:
The rapid rise of online learning platforms has democratized access to education, but concerns remain regarding student engagement and the ability to replicate the dynamism of a physical classroom. This presentation builds upon research previously presented at the 2023 EduLearn Conference (Palma, Spain) which explored the potential of Volumetric Video (VV) – a technology generating high-fidelity, 3D representations of people and objects – to enhance online learning experiences. Here, we present the findings of a year-long study investigating the effects of VV on student learning, attention, and engagement within an online Africana Studies course at the University of Arizona.
Methodology:
The study employed a mixed-methods approach, incorporating a quasi-experimental design with quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. One hundred thirty undergraduate students enrolled in the course were given the opportunity to participate in the study. Choosing to do so required attending live volumetric broadcasts or watching the recordings or live broadcasts. After each viewing, a short survey will be completed containing 5-8 questions about attention, engagement, interactivity, presence, viewing comfort, etc. Additionally, there will be:
Pre- and Post-Course Assessments: Measuring knowledge acquisition through standardized exams:
Eye-Tracking Data: Recording student gaze patterns during lectures to gauge attention levels (for those choosing to use a limited number of wearables)
Student Surveys: Assessing perceived engagement, learning satisfaction, and sense of presence within the virtual environment.
Focus Groups: Conducting in-depth discussions to explore student experiences and preferences.
My graduate student and I will provide a technical overview of Volumetric Video technology, including:
- Capture Systems: Discussing the process of recording volumetric data
- Delivery Platforms: Exploring various methods for streaming and presenting VV content
- Hardware Accessibility: Addressing the feasibility and costs associated with accessing VV technology for educators
- A live demonstration will showcase the technical aspects of VV streaming, providing attendees with a firsthand experience of the technology.
Our presentation will also include how our study contributes to the ongoing dialogue regarding the future of online learning. Our preliminary findings from the Fall 2023 term suggest that Volumetric Video has the potential to revolutionize online education by creating a more engaging and interactive learning environment, ultimately fostering deeper student understanding and knowledge acquisition. The study group was very small, so we anticipate the Spring 2024 term will yield significant findings, hopefully supporting the preliminary results. The presentation concludes by discussing the pedagogical implications of VV and outlining future research directions to further explore its potential across diverse academic disciplines. Keywords:
