Abstract:

The integration of different technologies in many areas such as science, engineering, architecture, etc. has proved to produce enhancements of several activities by automating key operations. In terms of education, technology has also become a key element that changes the teaching and learning processes. The idea of including any technology in education is to overcome some drawbacks and cause improvements that benefits teacher or students over the traditional education. The education of english as a foreign language is important since english is the most commonly spoken language in the world. Nevertheless, the study of a foreign language in many students becomes difficult because the student’s learning context in their native countries is not favorable to develop linguistic skills, especially speaking, grammar and vocabulary. Therefore, teachers and researchers have included technologies in the education of english to reduce the learning difficulties from their students.

However, given the different types of technologies available for english learning, it is imprescindible for researchers, scholars and practitioners to understand and gain deep insights into how to effectively apply Information Communication Technologies (ICT) for the benefits of education. Moreover, the possible uses of emerging ICTs such as Augmented Reality (AR) within an educational context have only been discussed in a limited number of studies and there is a lack of practical examples that demonstrate how AR can change the educational process. Therefore, In this study we analyse in depth the Augmented Reality (AR) technology, how can it be applied and its implications in the teaching-learning process of english as a foreign language.

For this purpose we conduct a systematic mapping in which 36 key papers were selected, reviewed and analyzed. As a result, we provide some findings regarding: how can AR be applied in the learning of english, which are the main english skills improved by AR, what kind of software or development tools where implemented and the approach used for executing augmented reality within the educational context.
