Abstract:
There is approximately 4.5 million small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Mexico that represent 64% of workforce and contribute with 40% of the national Gross Domestic Product. Under these circumstances, it is necessary to promote research on these companies, on specific matters such as their main problems and their possible solutions.
Whenever a small business owner can count on financial resources and good management, they will be able to accurately answer to the market needs and expectations. However, it is common for small companies to start their operations with not enough capital as to secure their success. Generally when a small business owner is asked what their greatest needs are, there is the big possibility that their answer will be related to financial resources, in most cases these problems derive from accounting and administrative factors as a result of poor planning, this situation causes new problems such as the lack of capacity to obtain funding to start, develop and keep the company, just to name a few.
It is true that there exists a number of institutions destined to financially support this market segment, but it is also true that small business owners can seldom obtain credit. They face the fact that both their credit history and their financial status render them unable to capitalise even more.
That being said, the lack of proper financing that helps the existence of small and medium companies, is one of the greatest obstacles their owners might encounter. These entrepreneurs do not get funding because, either they don´t know there are institutions where they can get credit or they do not qualify for it because of their bad credit history, economic status or the insufficiency of payment guarantees. Keywords:
