Abstract:
Healthcare education is undergoing rapid transformation as Generation Z (Gen Z) increasingly represents the majority of learners within our health professions programs (Rezazadeh et.al, 2025). Portrayed as high digital fluency, with a preference for interactive learning, instant materials and expectations for immediate feedback (Reid, L. et.al. 2023), Gen Z learners often encounter traditional healthcare education models that we suspect are not fully aligned with their perceived technological competencies or expectations (Raghavan & Amirtharaj, 2025). This misalignment of our expectations of the students and of the students’ expectations of higher education (HE) teaching, highlights the need to re-examine existing educational structures and integrate digital strategies that support the future of effective healthcare education (Alexander, B,.2016).
This paper explores the intersection of healthcare education, the digital skills of Gen Z learners, and strategic planning for future healthcare education. It aims to identify gaps between traditional approaches and contemporary learner needs and proposes a framework for building a co-created future-ready healthcare education system. A narrative synthesis approach is used to review literature on Gen Z learning characteristics, current practices in healthcare education, and emerging digital tools relevant to healthcare training. The analysis integrates theoretical perspectives on technology-enhanced learning with empirical evidence from recent innovations in healthcare professions education.
Findings highlight a significant mismatch between traditional healthcare education models, the digital skill deficiency and the expectations of digitally native Gen Z learners. Key trends include increased reliance on digital support tools, growing integration of simulation-based and virtual learning environments, and expanding use of telehealth in healthcare training. Strategic alignment requires redesigning curricula to be future facing, incorporate blended learning and digital competencies upskilling of both staff and students which will be essential for modern healthcare practice. To prepare future healthcare professionals effectively, education must evolve to reflect the real digital proficiency and learning preferences of Gen Z. Institutions should prioritise technology integration, staff digital skill development, and strategic planning that anticipates emerging innovations such as AI, virtual simulation, and telehealth. A future-ready healthcare education model will support more adaptive, engaging, and equitable learning environments that align with contemporary healthcare needs. Educational leaders should invest in digital infrastructure, promote staff upskilling, and adopt flexible pedagogical frameworks. Aligning healthcare education with Gen Z’s digital competencies will strengthen healthcare reasoning, enhance learner engagement, and improve readiness for technology-rich healthcare environments. Keywords:
