Abstract:

This review article examines the concept and potential benefits of an "Audit Lab" established at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW). Given the increasing complexity and digitalization of auditing, practice-oriented, technology-driven education is of critical importance. Traditional teaching formats are increasingly reaching their limits, as they can only inadequately reflect the dynamic demands of modern auditing practice. An Audit Lab provides a simulated environment in which students can undergo real-world audit processes, apply modern technologies such as data analytics software and AI-assisted audit tools, and develop critical competencies.

The article discusses the key features of such a lab, the methodological approaches for its curricular integration, as well as the opportunities and challenges associated with its practical implementation. Both didactic considerations and infrastructural and organizational aspects are addressed. It is concluded that an Audit Lab represents significant added value for the education of future auditors, effectively bridges the gap between theory and practice, and simultaneously opens up promising opportunities for applied research in the field of audit methodology.
