Abstract:
The subject known as Construction II is taught on fourth grade in the Architecture degree at the Polytechnic University of Valencia. In this subject students should develop the necessary competence for building design. The methodology in this subject has been changed from traditional lectures to a flipped classroom method.
By using this new methodology, students acquire the necessary competence to building design, which are: design of construction solutions, identification and characteristics of components and their relationship with final building project, and perform a correct predimensioning.
First of all, an index is prepared, including the documentation which will be studied of all the lectures to be given, straightaway the syllabus of each lecture is sent four days before including explanatory videos. Doubts are cleared in class and the parts of the project are proposed. Afterwards, the analytical design and predimensioning constructive solutions of the project are developed. Finally, the results obtained are check in clasrroom.
In conclusion, the multitude of concepts related to building design is better assimilated with this methodology; as they become clearer than with theoretical learning. This is reflected in surveys, which show an increase in students’ satisfaction level. In addition, the average mark of this subject has increased significantly over the mark obtained by the traditional lecture system. Keywords:
Flipped classroom method, project design method, skills learning.
