Abstract:
The present paper describes a MODDLE workshop for a master course taught at the University of Málaga on the history of English handwriting, from Old English (c. 900) to early modern English (c. 1700), with the invention and subsequent spread of the printed book, which consists of six class sessions together with another six hours of autonomous work.

The workshop has been organised into four different steps, necessarily sequential: 1) background readings on the history of English handwriting (designed as a SCORM standard for convenience); 2) the building-up of a selected glossary with the necessary terms in the fields of codicology and palaeography (collaborative work); 3) three wikis through which the students identify the script proposing a likely date of composition (in groups of 3 students); and 4) a self-assessment to measure the students' level of achievement (individually). This proposal has been tested for the last two years, turning out to be an efficient tool for the learning of the foundations of English handwriting.
