Abstract:
Achieving accreditation by an international body has become an important instrument for business schools to set themselves apart, ensure a high level of quality and earn worldwide recognition –while learning valuable lessons along the way. The three best-known accreditors that work with business schools from all across the globe are the Association to Advance Collegiate School of Business – AACSB (United States); the European Foundation for Management Development – EFMD (European Union), and the Association of MBAs – AMBA (based in the United Kingdom). Despite the powerful benefits that come with international accreditation, the process itself can be considerably challenging, primarily related to cost and contextual applicability. In the context of the Spanish higher education system, business schools are subjected to regulatory bodies on two levels: national and regional (autonomous communities). Consequently, understanding and navigating the similarities and differences in international and national standards, and the rationales underlying the accreditation processes, is necessary for all higher education institutions seeking accreditation in both Spain and overseas. The purpose of this paper is to discuss a comprehensive experience of a Spanish business school with international accreditation of its MBA programmes. Drawing on a two-year journey towards AMBA accreditation, the paper highlights the challenges faced and the lessons learned. Keywords:
