Abstract:
The present paper deals with the dependence of school success on the material conditions of families with school-age children. On the basis of the detailed analysis of several potentialities of family environment and with the focus on the scope and content of family libraries of the 8th form pupils, we examined their relation to the level and results of educational processes in the case of 800 families (more than 5,000 people) living in northern Slovakia (region of Liptov). Availability of books in the family affects the child's personality and contributes to the development of his/her expressive skills, emotions, imagination and thinking, ethical and aesthetic feelings and inspires him/her to perform creative activities. Although nowadays the interest in reading books gradually decreases and the book is only one of many information sources, its role in the processes of school education remains irreplaceable. Keywords:
