Abstract:
It is undoubtable that the advancement in AI technology has had an impact on every field and aspect of our lives. In most of the occasions, the advantages are much more beneficial than the potential disadvantages and dangers. Incorporating AI technology to college education, especially in the field of architecture, may offer valuable opportunities for research, learning and design development. In fact, we can find multiple examples of institutions that have integrated AI in their curriculum, one way or another. MIT School of Architecture and Planning was the frontrunner, offering courses focused on computational design, and AI applications in architecture. One of the most successful examples is the integration of AI with humans in structural design, as explained in a paper by MIT doctoral student Dat Ha. At UCLA in Los Angeles, the emphasis is placed on the integration of AI technologies in the design process, which is one of the most complex aspects, due to the ethical considerations and authorship issues. This is not the only concern that is being raised about this technology. Many scholars have shared their concerns about other dangers, such as the overreliance on AI tools as a substitute for critical thinking and creativity, the decontextualization of data by AI algorithms or the elimination of traditional design skills that are essential in architectural education.
However, many consider that these undesirable effects could be counterbalanced by the proper supervision and integration of experts in the implementation of these new technologies. As a result, there could be very important benefits such as improved design efficiency, the facilitation of realistic visualization and simulation of design and the integration of multiple disciplines to enrich the design process.
This text will try to discern the advantages and disadvantages of integrating AI technology with architectural education, focusing on different cases of study, to understand the actual repercussion of this technology and try to predict the future or the discipline.
