Abstract:
Since the beginning of the digital age, online learning has become an increasingly used mode of education. In the year 2020, this has been especially true with the development of the Hyflex model. Hyflex education (a hybrid of asynchronous and synchronous in-person with online formats) has now introduced itself as the newest model of teaching. Due to Covid-19, Hyflex has started to gain traction because it provides the flexibility necessary to continue education despite the circumstances. However, after the virus is no longer an issue, the question arises, “will the Hyflex model remain sustainable or become problematic?” The purpose of this study is to understand the concept of Hyflex learning and test its viability for universities, students, faculty, and administration. This research team employed the mixed method approach to test the sustainability and effectiveness of Hyflex learning environments. The mixed methods used include literature reviews, precedent analysis, and collection of data from online surveys of the users. The scope of this research covered the interpersonal interactions, technology problems, and financial implications of the Hyflex education method. This research did not delve into the successes and failures of other education methods but instead primarily analyzed the positive and negative results of the currently embraced Hyflex model. This research team found broad consensus among various other research studies through literature reviews that there are indeed downfalls to the current Hyflex model. Thus, this education model, although necessary at this time, may not be a sustainable method over the long term.
