Abstract:
Statistics is an essential component of mathematics for numerous study fields: Especially in the area of social sciences and educational research, empirical studies are based on statistical methods. Despite this fact, a statistical didactic for the lecturers is not available for the above mentioned fields. Germany only has one text book addressing this topic.
This paper attempts to conceptualise a practice oriented didactic to rectify this deficiency. The central focus point of this paper is literally based on the following question: How could one“...present the most brittle science in various manners to the extent that it looses its awfulness and displays its best side“. In other words, how do I convey statistics in a way that excites students and enables them retain as much as possible?
Fascinated by thought of perceiving statistics as a “touchable“ science, this paper is dedicated to how and whereby statistics can be comprehended and how the results can be assessed. Educational concepts, which are also applied in (school) mathematics are emphasised upon. The various methods of statistical science are discussed and explained based on research examples. Possible aids for use in statistic classes are an additional focus point. The focus here is on the new media; especially on the various options offered by E-learning. In conclusion, options the lecturers can use to monitor the educational results will be discussed. The emphasis is on the contrast between university educational results versus formal educational results.
The paper attempts to close a gap in the university area by providing a didactic statistic education concept that is important for various courses of studies.
