Abstract:
This presentation will showcase materials that were developed for a Vocabulary Learning app designed for Emirati EFL learners in an English language foundation program at a university in the United Arab Emirates. Firstly, it will demonstrate some of the initial pilot materials that were developed using Book Widgets and iBooks Author. It will also briefly explain the principles and rationale underpinning these materials. Secondly, it will describe the processes involved in developing a prototype of the app. These processes included developing a simple prototype in MS PowerPoint slides, and wire framing each activity type to map out interactions and envisioned functionality. A functional prototype was built in Articulate Storyline to “test the key components of the instructional interactivity” (Allan & Sites, 2012, Ch. 8) and to test the materials with real users. Finally, the most recent version of the app will be demonstrated.
