Abstract:
Generative artificial intelligence enables educators to develop small, task-specific digital tools without extensive programming expertise. This study explores the potential of an educator-built AI tool through the design and implementation of an automated formatting checker for academic assignments. Using a design-based research approach, a prototype application was developed with AI assistance in Python programming language to analyse formatting in documents created in Microsoft Word. Code generation and debugging were supported by the generative AI system ChatGPT (paid subscription version) developed by OpenAI. The tool evaluates elements such as font size, line spacing, paragraph and image alignment, and heading styles, and produces a report identifying deviations from predefined formatting guidelines.
The prototype was implemented in a higher-education course where students submit written assignments with specific formatting requirements. The study examines the tool’s impact on the time required for manual formatting checks, and how this reduction may influence feedback speed and students’ satisfaction with the course. Initial findings suggest that automated pre-submission checks help students correct technical issues independently and reduce routine workload for educators. The results illustrate how generative AI can lower barriers for educators to design practical digital tools tailored to their teaching context.Keywords:
