THE MUSIC OF MOORS AND CHRISTIANS AS CURRICULAR MATERIAL IN PUBLISHING HOUSES OF THE VALENCIAN COMMUNITY

Abstract:
This essay deals with the presence of the music of Moors and Christians, also called Festera Music, as curricular material in text books of secondary of the Valencian Community. We have analyzed the curricular treatment of Festera Music as an extension of the musical folklore of the Valencian Community in the music text books offering publishing houses. The music of Moors and Christians as part of the folklore of this Community is a content that appears gathered in the different Decrees which developed the curriculum of the Obligatory Secondary Education. Therefore, it is necessary that it appears reflected like so in text books. This investigation reflects and denotes a total ignorance of the subject and an evident absence of this music research material. Almost 100 % of the analyzed publishers do not mention the topic. Only 7.3% of analyzed publishers dedicate a few pages to the music of Moors and Christians but not in detail. It is necessary that these publishing houses become aware of the importance that this music represents in this stage. With all the analyzed data we have been able to state that the study of the musical folklore is not a content that has the importance that is deserved on the part of publishing houses at the secondary stage. It is also irrelevant the study of music in the Valencian Community and its artistic and cultural heritage. It is time to open up new paths in the study of this culture that tends to get lost and should being recovered. We must insist on covering this emptiness concerning the curricular processing that exists because the musical folklore, and in this case, the music of Moors and Christians can perfectly be made compatible with Classical Music.
