Abstract:
Astronauts need high quality training that will provide the necessary level of deep learning for them to assimilate information at an appropriate level to accurately perform mission critical tasks. Interactive video training made up of elements such as play and pause buttons, menus, hot spots, and search functioning allow the user to self-pace and absorb training content in a non-linear way. Additionally, heuristic video training aids the learner in decision-making as they make selections and manipulate the interactive elements to create a custom training experience and review the most essential information before performing mission critical tasks. This paper reviews the literature as a synthesis of these concepts -- a parallel comparison between the two types of learning components in video training to measure efficacy of human performance. The findings that interactive video training is helpful to learners and aids in learner absorption acts as a spring board in determining what this author has coined as heuristic elemental learning components. Both interactive elements and heuristic elements allow each crew member to self-pace, and make custom selections where individual training gaps lie, thus reviewing the most essential information before performing critical tasks. Interactive video training and heuristic elemental video training work in tandem to compliment the theoretical and practical infrastructures, thus becoming parallel efficacies for astronaut performance standards.
