Abstract:

Ways of ESL (English as a Second Language) teaching have changed enormously. However, there is evidence that the problem of motivation is on the rise. In many Russian educational institutions, there are programs of interpreter certification, accompanying the master/bachelor degree in non-linguistic field. During the curriculum, reading a scientific paper is one of the basic subjects and it demands good level of students’ language skills, knowledge in professional area and understanding structure and language of scientific article.

The aim of this research was to reveal methods which could contribute in students reading motivation.

We used an additional materials consisted of the easy to understand video lectures, news reports and mass media articles which corresponded to the scientific research reading.

30 medical students of RUDN University (Russia) had been watching scientific video lectures, radio podcasts and reading mass media reports before dealing with the original research paper for 3 months. Other 26 students were given only tasks concerning the research paper reading.

The results of observation and questionnaire showed that pre-reading activity carried out with additional materials significantly rose student’s motivation in reading a scientific paper and provoked the further scientific interest.

We can conclude that success of students' reading activity depends on the implementation of additional multimedia and video materials concerning the theme of a research paper.
