TECHNOLOGY-DRIVEN JOB MARKET REQUIREMENTS: A LOOK AT HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS' PREPARATION OF GRADUATES FOR JOBS IN THE DIGITAL ECONOMY

Abstract:
Over the last decade, the world of work has changed considerably due to the expansion of the digital economy. This has created demands for competencies and skills for new job categories which hitherto did not exist. Unfortunately, in many countries, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) have been slow to match up with these new demands in the digital economy. Ghana is no exception. Youth unemployment remains persistently high, with Ghana recording 33% of youth unemployment in 2021. An increasing number of employers say they face challenges hiring candidates with the technical and adaptive competencies that the digital economy requires. Thus, suggesting misalignment in the university education and training, and what the real labour market needs. This gap between what universities produce (by way of skills and competencies or workforce) and what the labour market needs brings about dire social and economic consequences, culminating in large-scale graduate unemployment. Consequently, this paper explores the nexus between higher education delivery, digital economy skills requirements, and graduate employability in Ghana's digital economy.
It seeks answers to four research questions:
RQ1: What is the current state of graduate employment in Ghana?
RQ2: Which skills and competencies are most desired in the digital economy?
RQ3: How are HEIs responding in terms of what practices are proving effective and what aspects of education are failing to prepare students to succeed in a technology-driven workplace?
RQ4: To what extent are HEIs forming productive partnerships with industry in training graduates for workforce readiness?
The study adopts a conventional literature review approach, using scholarly publications published between 2015 and 2026 from Scopus, Web of Science, and other reputable academic databases. Text mining and content analysis procedures are applied for detecting common themes, conceptual patterns, and areas of convergence or contradiction across the reviewed literature.
The expected result is a conceptual model that traces the relationship between HEIs, industry actors, and graduates that pertains to digital economy preparedness. Rather than merely detailing existing challenges, the model aims to find out where meaningful leverage exists in terms of which institutional measures, curricular choices, and collaborative arrangements can make a meaningful difference in producing work-ready graduates. The findings are hoped to provide real-world implications for policymakers, higher education institutions, and other stakeholders to contribute to efforts to make higher education graduates meet the needs of a technology-driven economy. The study also contributes to the existing body of knowledge on the digital economy and its relationship with graduate employability.Keywords:
