Abstract:
The TWIG Technical Writing Initiative in Graphic Communications is an Institutional Review Board (IRB) approved research project designed to improve student's learning of technical writing and provide instructors in Graphic Communications with valuable resources. The research aimed to develop a concise supplemental technical writing resource for Graphic Communications majors and instructors based on assembled competencies gathered from a survey of academics and industry professionals. The survey comprised 10 topic areas, including terminologies, processes, proposals, reports, abstracts, instructions, documentation, visuals, presentations, and business communications. Over 120 respondents from industry and academia were asked to assess the importance of listed competencies using a slider tool, and additional space was provided for feedback and additional competencies. No personal information was collected, and the results are shared with instructors and others interested in encouraging technical writing competencies in Graphic Communications. Participants consented to have their responses and feedback used in the research project.
