Abstract:
In this research, we study the right way to start practicing listening skills. We assume that one should start by getting to learn basics of phonetics of a language first. We analyze how constant improvement of pronunciation skills gives a better idea about a language itself and its spoken communication. The purpose of the paper is to explore the relationship of phonetics with other skills such as listening, to study how phonetic knowledge influences speech comprehension. Thus, this article is devoted to the study of how to become a more confident listener. Having identified the key factors that determine successful listening skills acquisition, the authors developed two modules for the English as a second language starter course in learning management system MOODLE. Module 1 – Basics of phonetics, Module 2 – Main course, practice of core language skills. These modules are used to introduce new English learners to basic language skills starting with the core skill of phonetics which can be defined as part and parcel of the online course itself. The course contains interactive exercises of various kinds, quizzes, games, techniques and methods to practice accuracy and fluency at the beginner level. More importantly, learners are taught how to approach listening and how to listen carefully and reach the goal that was aimed at. They get to know about strategies they can use to improve their listening ability step by step taking into consideration their pronunciation skills. Thus, the course allows its users to get used to a variety of different speaking styles and real life situations. The quality and adequacy of the developed course have been tested. The analysis of the satisfaction survey of the developed modules has been carried out, the interconnection of phonetic skills and listening abilities through the course has been determined. The satisfaction survey conforms to our theory and shows that mastering phonetic skills guides learners throughout the entire course and helps them feel more confident. Keywords:
