Abstract:
Interdisciplinary studies provide different experiences that help students develop various senses and perceptions. These skills are even more important for art education and art teacher candidates. Therefore, these interdisciplinary activities which include projects that aim to improve field-specific skills as well as to gain more awareness on socio-cultural matters, such as helping each other, empathy, love of animals and nature, gaining knowledge about and protecting nature and history-, will contribute to training more sensitive teachers.
The aim of this research is to present students' ideas on an activity that demonstrates the characteristics of drawing and textile art fields and biology and technology disciplines that can contribute to one and other.
Because it is a holistic single case, the qualitative research method is used for the study. The research was carried out with a group of 4th-grade students from textile and art fields, within the frame of a study plan that includes research, preliminary preparation, observation, analysis, drawing-textile-painting practice, and exhibition. The study group consists of 12 art pre service teachers. A written questionnaire is used for learning the opinions of pre service teachers regarding the research process. Data collected at the end of the research is evaluated using different themes with the descriptive analysis method.
The research process includes preparation, recognition, familiarization, encountering scientific fields, informing, making realistic paintings of the selected Endemic Plants of Uludağ, then making creative paintings of the portraits of pre service teachers and the plants they have drawn, and displaying those. At the beginning of the study, the pre service teachers are asked two questions: the concepts they use to create projects and the meaning of the word "Endemic." It has been noted that the pre service teachers have not heard the term before. Thus, during the study, the term "Endemic" is highlighted and an approach that unites "Art" and "Textile" as well as "Biology" and "Technology" fields is adopted. The drawing method that is used in the Biology field is applied by pre service teachers after examining books and catalogs and doing the microscopic examination in the "Herbarium." This practice aims to help students have a more meticulous approach regarding preliminary preparations for their drawings by showing them a systematic sketching process, improve their description skills, display their creativity, and also gain the necessary awareness to protect nature and plant diversity as a historical heritage and pass it to the next generation. The practice also aims to help the students see the relationship between technology and art education through using technological tools and practices, and think about how they can use technology for professional purposes in a creative and comprehensive way.
At the end of the study, it is observed that the students now know the definition of the word endemic, realize the importance of interdisciplinary studies and the technological requirements in their professional work. The video, about the activities in the project, presented as a part of the exhibition and the e-exhibition catalog can be counted as examples of interdisciplinary interactions and cooperation. Keywords:
