Abstract:
This research is the result of collaboration between Kingston University and the College of Integrated Chinese Medicine, both in the UK. The objectives of the study were to investigate whether outcome measures used in current acupuncture practice adequately reflect the treatment process and the factors that patients experience. Data were collected on 495 patients over a period of 8 years in order to explore the effects of acupuncture treatment as assessed by patients. Acupuncture patients' presentation is often complex, long-term and multifaceted. Musculo-skeletal and psychological conditions were the most prominent complaints and the majority of patients had chronic conditions with nearly half having been unwell for more than 5 years. Results are suggestive of a positive benefit from acupuncture for patients with a wide variety of predominantly chronic conditions. Further, it is shown that many patients value generalized changes in factors such as energy and stress levels , as well as in their main condition. Statistical analysis showed a clear trend towards better health over time for patients receiving acupuncture treatment.
