Abstract:
In the 1980s lecturers in UK polytechnics formed the Association of Statistics Lecturers in Polytechnics (ASLIP) with the aim "to foster and support the development of statistical education". In 1992 , when all polytechnics became universities in the UK, this assocaition became ASLU and one of its main activities is to hold regular conferences, bringing together teachers of statistics in higher education to share good practice and innnovative methods. Speakers are invited from those lecturers who can demonstrate who have novel ideas in teaching, learning and assessment that may benefit the ASLU participants. Other presenters are those who can report on wider issues in statistical education such as funded research. This paper reports some of the major ideas in teaching learning and assessment strategies that have been discussed at ASLU conferences to demonstrate the sharing of good practice amongst teachers and also to show how research in statistical education can lead to interventions that enhance the student experience. Examples include the Creating Statsistical Resources from Real Datasets (STARS) project which made available real data and scenarios for teaching and learning statistics in Business, Psychology and Health; the Variety in Statistics Assessment project, which resulted in an international project drawing together good practice across the world; the research report on the Future of Statistics Teaching in UK Universities, which was part funded by ASLU and brought together experience across the whole UK scene, the use of technology to improve methods of teaching , learning and assessment
