Abstract:
In India, with almost seven decades of democracy and several thousand years of civilization amalgamated with the unique ability to assimilate the best global practices down the ages, the knowledge of good education is neither novel nor in need of any validation. It must be ethical, contemporary, comprehensive and above all ‘sahaj’ or natural. The experiences must be real and identifiable by the student to their respective surroundings. Even introduction of newer or alien ideas must be viewed by the student in sync with his immediate environment. The coming millennium will expose the populace to changes offered by shrinking distances, swift connectivity, politico-economic interdependency amongst the global community and environmental challenges. The ‘Aims of Education’ must empower the individual with the ability to study the given circumstances and resources, chalk out the possible path(s) or alternatives, evaluate the comparative advantages and hindrances, suggest the best course of action based on judgment and desirability. Thus the question, 'what should be the aims of school education for the Indian student' assumes immense significance. The present paper reviews the Aims of Education in different committees and commissions in India and elaborates on how to fashion them in its prevailing imminence.
