Abstract:

Poverty is one of the main problems in developing countries to be eliminated, including in the third world country like Indonesia, which has about 44% poor population. Some economists have stated that education has taken the deep role to bring the economic growth and get rid of poverty. Unfortunately, the participation in school and college of Indonesia is very low. As college participation indicates the progress of country’s thought and technology, college participation rate is important for developing country to be developed country. The college participation in Indonesia is only 10.07%, compare to developed country like USA which has 63% college participation (for white). There are still many Indonesian who can’t get into college, so they become inferior in labor market and are trapped in poverty hole. Therefore, student of Faculty of Economy Universitas Indonesia build a sustainable project to help some unfortunate and homeless children around the college pursue their dream to get into the college and get their better life, environment, and income, which is named Master FEUI.

Master FEUI is a voluntary teaching program controlled by Department of Social Activity in Student Executive Board of Faculty of Economy Universitas Indonesia. Concentration of Master FEUI is to help less fortunate student from Master Senior High School get into college by teaching the subjects that will be tested in college examination intensively five days a week. Moreover, Master FEUI provide them the books and curriculum, information about colleges, test simulation, administration to join the tests, and help them find scholarships when they get into the college. Students of Master Senior High School itself come from slum area behind bus terminal, most of whom work as street musician, house keeper, labor, and other handyman job. In short-term goals point of view, Master FEUI is the only Department project that has real outcome (in annually goal) in changing the life of children who are less fortunate into the better life and help them get out from poverty trap of their slum area. In the sidelines of teaching process, Master FEUI also give them entrepreneurship training and character building, so that the students are not only able to do the entrance university exam as well, but also give them alternative of being successful without entering college and shaping the character of young leaders to have good attitude.

This paper will talk about Master FEUI history, teaching program, whole programs of Master FEUI, success, problem, and evaluation to inspire many people around the world to pay attention to less fortunate children education.
