Abstract:

Artificial Intelligence is rapidly reshaping the landscape of education, prompting educator preparation programs to reconsider how they prepare future teachers for emerging technological realities. This presentation examines the integration of AI mediated conversations—such as those facilitated by chatbots and virtual assistants—into educator preparation, highlighting their potential to transform teaching, learning, and professional growth. As AI becomes increasingly accessible, the ability to engage with these tools thoughtfully and responsibly is becoming an essential competency for new educators.

The session will explore how AI conversations can enhance personalized learning by adapting content and feedback to individual needs, offering future educators opportunities to engage with differentiated instruction in ways that mirror modern classrooms. These tools also have the capacity to increase learner engagement, providing interactive, real time responses that support active learning and reflective practice. In addition, AI conversations offer a safe space for preservice teachers to rehearse professional dialogue, practice decision making in simulated classroom situations, and develop confidence in using technology that is likely to become ubiquitous in schools.

Despite these benefits, integrating AI into educator preparation presents important challenges. Programs must navigate ethical concerns related to privacy, data use, and potential bias while ensuring equitable access to AI tools. Faculty and candidates also require training and support to implement AI conversations meaningfully rather than superficially. Furthermore, assessing the effectiveness of AI supported learning experiences remains complex, requiring thoughtful design and evaluation to ensure that AI use genuinely enhances teacher preparation.

Looking ahead, the session will discuss emerging directions for AI integration within educator preparation, including expanding opportunities for research, establishing clear guidelines to support ethical and responsible use, and strengthening professional development for both teacher candidates and faculty members. These efforts will be critical for shaping the role of AI in preparing educators who can navigate technological change while maintaining a strong focus on human centered teaching.

This presentation ultimately argues that AI conversations hold significant promise for enriching educator preparation, but their potential can only be realized through intentional design, careful attention to ethical considerations, and sustained support for those who will use these tools in their professional practice. Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of how AI conversations can be meaningfully incorporated into teacher education and what considerations must guide their implementation moving forward.
