Abstract:
With the initiation of written discourse analysis of English language textbooks in 2010, RoLing – a research group in an English Department at a state University in East Java, Indonesia – seeks to expand the members’ knowledge in linguistics. This RoLing group (Research on Linguistics) has conducted several research activities related to linguistic data pertinent to educational activities within the context of English as a foreign language. Currently, the group is concerned with building and analyzing both written and spoken corpora as part of the group’s academic research projects. C-SMILE (Corpus of State University of Malang Indonesian Learners’ English) has been collected from texts of undergraduate theses written in English by Indonesian EFL learners, meanwhile CINTA (Corpus of Indonesian Texts in Academia) has been pooled from texts of undergraduate theses written in Indonesian. In relation to the research group’s activities, this paper aims at describing both C-SMILE and CINTA projects along with its research findings. In addition, the results of the research and some on-going and potential research from the corpus data are put forward. Finally, the discussion is concluded by providing some recommendations and suggestions on English language teaching based on the result of the research.
