Abstract:
Nowadays, one of the biggest scopes in marine engineering studies is to achieve a correct approach to the practice period needed to get the maximum skills according to the marine engineering high standards. Due to this, the High Technical School of Nautical Sciences and Marine Engineering of Bilbao has included curricular work experiences as a part of the new degrees offered. The work experiences period has been fitted during the second semester of the fourth year and its equivalence under the European Credit and Transfer System is a quantity of thirty credits. Because the marine engineering studies contain a double professional skill (the possibility of working either in an inland company or on board a vessel), the student body may choose whichever of two depending on the student´s professional target. The student body`s task has to be followed up by two tutors, being one of them a university´s lecturer and the other one is coming from the inland facility. In the case of the sea services, the tutor’s labor becomes more difficult when the students are sailing due to a lack of communication. The aim of this paper is to provide the school´s tutor with enough tools, just in order to guide and evaluate the work of the student body on board. In addition, the paper tries to show how to overcome some difficulties such as the barriers in communications when the vessel is sailing at sea.
