Abstract:
Substantial changes have taken place at European universities as a result of the Bologna Process and the implementation of a common education area. The main objective of said process was twofold: make the European higher education system competitive at the world level and ensure that university qualifications were comparable at the European level.
This study analyses the distribution of the international demand for Spanish higher education according to the field of study chosen. That is, the fields of learning where said demand is concentrated are analysed. The ultimate aim consists of examining the preferred fields of study and explaining if important changes have occurred in the international demand’s make-up in recent years.
Data on the total international students and the students from the European Union have been presented. In this regard, it can be observed that although there has been scarcely any variation in the percentage of international students choosing Social and Legal Sciences, Engineering and Architecture, Humanities and Sciences, a considerably higher percentage of these students are enrolling in Health Sciences. Concerning the students from the European Unión, the increase in the percentage of students that enrolled in Health Sciences is even more pronounced.
