Abstract:
At last year's ICERI Conference, I presented 'Experimental Media Horizons: Syncretic and Subversive Practices" (http://badmindtime.files.wordpress.com/2009/10/experimental_media1.pdf), which sketched the principal practices and new vocabularies in the experimental media landscape. This year's installment, Digital Media Voodoo, demonstrates a formal approach to live digital media performance through the online application meme(tm) Jr., a video-jam application for young digital media artists (http://memejr.badmindtime.com).
The formal structure of live digital media performance in this presentation is predicated on separation of functional elements of the performance.Visual and sonic aspects are each separated into background, middle-ground, and foreground elements, as the meme(tm) Jr. application is analysed. Extended approaches to performance, such as classical video feedback and deconstruction of narratives, are also investigated.
