Abstract:
Since the incorporation of Spain in the European Higher Education Area, the generic or cross competences have gained greater importance.
The skills that students should develop must be acquired gradually, from beginner to expert level, and therefore it is necessary to gradually build knowledge, skills and attitudes throughout all the subjects of the degree. For the subject of Business Administration I in the School of Business Management, in Universitat Politècnica de València, three generic skills has been selected for their development: verbal communication, written communication and teamwork.
Mastery of oral communication competence involves the effective communication of ideas, knowledge and feelings in conversations and group activities (oral presentations and class activities). The mastery of this competence means clear and effective communication, structuring of discourse, adapting to the audience, using at same time verbal and nonverbal language, proper use of tone and rhythm, use of pauses and media support.
Regarding the written communication competency, it is key indicator for content, clarity, organization with recognizable parts, control of grammaticality, adaptation to the reader and typographical resource utilization.
Teamwork is a key competence, a prerequisite to university students who need to think analytically and systematically, for the properly management of time and meetings among team members, participation in decision-making and management of goals and projects. These skills are related to the following competencies: interpersonal communication, planning and organizing ability, critical thinking, time management and self-learning.
This study proposes a methodology, following the model of three levels of competence assessment used by the Deusto University, to track the acquisition of such skills from first courses to the last ones, using self, peer and teacher assessment tools.
