Abstract:
This article is devoted to the career-oriented aspect of training foreign students to study in technical universities of the Russian Federation.

Representing a complex of psychological, pedagogical, medical, social measures aimed at the formation of professional self-determination of a person, career guidance is a necessary component in the system of secondary and higher professional education of the Russian Federation. The success of a person in professional activity largely depends on the correct choice of specialty, taking into account individual abilities and demand for these specialists in the labor market.

The relevance of this study is due, on the one hand, high requirements for modern specialists in the labor market, on the other hand, the growing number of foreign citizens arriving for training in higher education programs in universities of the Russian Federation and do not have sufficient knowledge about their future specialty.

Obtaining higher professional education in Russian universities begins for foreign citizens with the training program in the University, which is the initial stage of the system of higher professional education of foreign citizens in universities of the Russian Federation. It is at this stage that the mastery of the Russian language as the language of the future specialty takes place, and professional orientation is one of the urgent tasks, the solution of which largely determines the effectiveness of the further educational route of foreign students in the educational space of the Russian University.

The purpose of this study is to describe the system of career guidance work with foreign students in the Russian technical University, taking into account the characteristics of the contingent of students and the educational environment of the technical University. The study was conducted at Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (SPbSTU), which occupies one of the leading places in the number of foreign students among universities of the Russian Federation.

In determining the optimal forms of career guidance work with foreign students of the pre-University training program, the experience of career guidance activities of secondary and higher educational institutions of the Russian Federation and foreign countries was studied.
Career guidance work at the stage of pre-University training includes a wide range of activities related to information and promotional activities (meetings with University administration, open Days, presentation of the University in foreign countries, the Days of Russian language abroad); educational activities (teaching foreign students the language of the future specialty); extracurricular activities (Tutors, teleconferences); the research activities (questionnaire).

The article focuses on the language aspect of career guidance, the creation of educational materials in Russian, aimed at the formation of foreign students’ communicative competence in both socio-cultural and educational and professional sphere of communication.

Experience of work with international students of the pre-University training program in the Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University shows that early career guidance and professional orientation of the Russian language course are important components of the successful adaptation of foreign applicants to the conditions of the new socio-cultural and academic environment.
