Abstract:
The aim of the article was to study peculiarities of communicative and lexical methods application in Russian universities. Specific feature of Russian education in the field of a second language acquisition is scarce or no possibility for the students to practice English as a media of communication. This situation complicates learning process, has negative impact on motivation and makes it harder to use prominent teaching tools and techniques. To cope with the situation it is necessary to introduce some supplementary resources, to create artificial language environment and to design extra exercises that can be seen unnecessary for the authors of the course. The methods used in the study can be divided into several groups. First one is analysis of the literature on the topic and the courses based on lexical and communicative approaches. Second group employs survey and knowledge assessment. And one more stage of the study included working out extra exercises to apply them and to later assess its effectiveness. The research showed that peculiar feature of the second language acquisition process for the Russian students is drilling which isn’t considered a very effective method in some other countries but it turns out necessary for the situations when real practical use of a foreign language is complicated. To achieve better results and to facilitate the process a teacher in class should create situations when students are forced to use a foreign language. Thus, only combination of communicative, lexical and traditional methods of teaching can bring better results.
