Abstract:
Nowadays Russian educational institutions are facing a very ambitious goal of integrating into the international educational society. New educational programmes that have been created recently by Russian government such as 5-100 are aimed at supporting 21 Russian universities helping them to make pleasant and competitive sphere not only for Russian students but for foreign ones as well.

According to new challenges that South Ural State University faces nowadays different departments start to open various Master programmes that are read in English. Foreign language department offers to complete the program 45.04.01 “Philology”, thanks to which its students will be able to extend their knowledge in different areas of linguistics and philology. One of the disciplines that is included into the obligatory list of subjects is “Methods of research in linguistics”.

The main aim of this article is to present organisation peculiarities and the structure of the course “Methods of research in linguistics”, to set up the goal, to select the most significant topics that will help Master students to get acquainted with various scientific fields in linguistics, to choose their research area and to write Master thesis by the end of their education.

By using a mixed methods approach (traditional research methods of observation, product analysis, questionnaire) the authors present the model of English language discipline “Methods of research in linguistics”. The authors also offer the most interesting tasks that could be given for students’ individual work and enumerate difficulties that they come across during the implementation of the course. In conclusion, the most important competences that are formed during this discipline are presented.
