Abstract:
This study aimed to assess the pre-service and in-service teachers’ perception of competence in ICT as input to their professional enhancement program. It is a descriptive research which re-analyzes data of 5,055 pre-service teachers from ten Teacher Education Institutions (TEIs) and 63,422 in-service teachers across 17 regions in the Philippines. All these data were obtained from three national projects of the Philippine National Research Center for Teacher Quality. The data emanated from the use of a 4-point self-assessment and standards-based Teacher’s Strengths and Needs Assessment tool of the Department of Education developed before the K to 12 Program, which has high psychometric properties. The results revealed which among the ten indicators of competence in ICT from the two versions of the tool where the pre-service and in-service teachers are more and less confident in. The results could be used as evidence-based advice in designing need-based professional development programs on ICT for teachers from their preparation in TEIs and as they continuously grow in the teaching profession. It could likewise strengthen the proposed enhancement in the professional standards for teachers on the area of ICT to be more relevant and compliant with the teacher quality requirements of the K to 12 Reform in the Philippines.
