Abstract:
Serious games are increasingly adopted as pedagogical tools in forensic science education due to their ability to simulate investigative environments while supporting structured skill development. Although many recent implementations rely on immersive virtual reality (VR) technologies, large-scale deployment of such systems can introduce financial, logistical, and scheduling challenges, particularly when training multiple cohorts of incoming law enforcement personnel. This paper presents the design of a gamified crime scene investigation training tool that prioritizes procedural learning and protocol compliance through an accessible interactive simulation.
The system places trainees in a simulated crime scene environment where they must perform a sequence of investigative tasks aligned with established forensic procedures. Learners are required to identify, document, preserve, and collect physical evidence while following correct investigative protocols. The platform focuses on reinforcing structured task execution, decision-making, and procedural accuracy. Gamification mechanics guide learners through the investigative process and encourage active engagement while maintaining alignment with real-world forensic workflows.
A scoring and feedback framework evaluates trainee performance based on adherence to investigative best practices, rewarding correct actions, and highlighting procedural errors. To support conceptual understanding alongside practical application, the system integrates an in-game knowledge base that provides explanations of forensic principles, evidence handling guidelines, and supplementary learning resources accessible during gameplay.
By combining interactive simulation with structured instructional design, this approach provides a scalable and resource-efficient method for introducing foundational forensic investigation skills in law enforcement education. The project demonstrates how gamified training environments can support procedural readiness and reinforce core investigative competencies while remaining accessible to institutions that may not have access to high-cost immersive training technologies.Keywords:
