Abstract:
Progression of knowledge beyond a pivotal point allows a transformation of concepts upon which that knowledge is based. These concepts cannot be undiscovered and as such form the basis of our new BSc Biochemistry programme at the University of Surrey. Application, understanding and critical assessment of the 6 threshold concepts forms the framework of overarching topics, or framework concepts; which provide an holistic structure for the interconnectivity of the ideas within the field.

The concept driven development of the course is designed to enhance teaching and learning, which will, in turn, act as a conduit to more innovative teaching methods.

Presentation of the programme review at this meeting aims to generate a wider discussion around nature of threshold and framework concepts. One of the primary aims is to feed into a cyclical Delphic developmental model for the new programme, with discussion and feedback from the attendees feeding directly into the structure of the new programme. We hope that attendees will be able to suggest changes and feel confident in identifying and implementing threshold concepts to the structure of their own teaching programmes.
