Abstract:
The intersection of gender, identity, and fashion represents a vibrant arena of scholarly debate and societal discussion, reflecting deep-seated cultural beliefs and individual aspirations for self-expression. In this complex discourse, children's fashion emerges as a particularly contentious field, where traditional gender norms not only persist but are often rigidly enforced, diminishing the expressive freedoms of the youngest in society. This enforcement, rooted in adult-centric views, outlines a prescriptive landscape of what is considered appropriate for different genders, thereby influencing children's understanding of their identities from an early age. The critical examination of these norms reveals a significant gap in the literature, especially regarding how fashion impacts children's gender identity formation and the potential for clothing to serve as a conduit for broader societal change towards inclusivity and diversity.

In direct response to these challenges, "The Kids’ Table" project aims to interrogate and dismantle the prevailing adult-centric paradigms that dominate children's fashion. Through the implementation of a speculative design and participatory design process, this initiative invites children aged 7 to 12 to actively engage in the creation and customization of their clothing, utilizing upcycling as a method to encourage creative expression and identity exploration. This methodology not only positions children as key stakeholders in fashion but also serves to question and expand the existing gender norms that have historically constrained their choices and self-perception.

The project's preliminary outcomes suggest a promising shift in perspective among participants, indicating a growing awareness and rejection of restrictive gender norms in favor of a more inclusive and fluid understanding of identity. By fostering an environment where children can freely express themselves through the medium of fashion, "The Kids’ Table" not only challenges traditional stereotypes but also highlights the potential for clothing to act as a powerful agent of social and personal transformation.

Contributing to the broader discourse on gender, identity, and societal norms, this research underscores the critical role of fashion in shaping children's self-conception and social interactions. Situating "The Kids’ Table" within the ongoing debate on gender and fashion, the study addresses a crucial gap in the literature and lays the groundwork for future investigations into the transformative power of inclusive fashion practices. Through this work, we advocate for a reconceptualization of children's wear as a space of opportunity and empowerment, where clothing becomes a vehicle for exploring and affirming diverse identities in a changing world.
