Abstract:
The problem of infrastructure which is source of concern to most tertiary institutions in developing countries has led to these schools engaging in manual method of keeping and processing departmental academic students’ records. The tertiary institutions are designed with several activities happening almost intermittently at units and departmental level. Departmental activities involving competitions, excursions, conferences, internship programs and a lot more take place with little or no proper records for future reference. In most instances, records that relate to students activities are poorly kept manually or semi-automated thereby leading to poor retrieval and ineffective decision making. Attending to students with reference and job placement recommendation could be cumbersome. The objective of this study is to develop a web-based Departmental Activity Information System for keeping records of all major activities and transactions within the university system. The system was designed using unified modelling language and implemented with PHP as web user interface, Apache as web server and MySQL as Database. This system provide a platform for departmental activities of tertiary institutions in developing countries to keep and process their records electronically with speed, accuracy and security. Information reference and judgement about a particular student or staff is speedily retrieved on real time.
