Abstract:
Work based learning is the style of learning that refers to utilising relevant work experience as a tool to enhance and consolidate learning. The paper aims to critically assess the findings of current case studies and literature on work based learning in the context on engineering education, including evaluating: degree apprenticeships; engineering degrees that integrate work based learning projects, integrated internships, sandwich year in industries, project work (relevant to industry), industry insights and learning from engineering companies, referred to as organisational learning. The paper is divided into two parts, the first part detailing and analysing the key parameters in delivering an effective work based learning program for engineering students within higher education. In other words, the first section speaks to common features of a successful work-based learning program. The second section discusses how these different parameters vary depending on the specific subset of students (Part-time, full time, degree apprentices and postgrads).Through research of literature, it is evident there are distinct features of a successful work based learning program, which varies depending on the type of students it is implemented for example. The findings of the this literature focused on the research of work based learning in the UK, US and Denmark. Keywords:
